Volvo has held a groundbreaking ceremony at its first US factory in Berkeley County, South Carolina.
Naturally, the company's North America chief, Lex Kerssemakers, got behind the controls of a Volvo excavator to begin digging at the factory site. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and other high-profile public figures attended the celebration.
The factory will eventually serve as the global production hub for the next-generation S60 Sedan, currently under development in Gothenburg. The S60 and another "yet to be determined" model will be exported globally from the Port of Charleston.
The company has highlighted a successful US comeback, with nationwide sales maintaining double-digit … more

CHARLESTON, S. Carolina (Reuters) -- Volvo aims to rebuild the brand's U.S. sales to 100,000 vehicles a year "as soon as possible," with help from a factory the company plans to open in 2018, its head of North American operations said.
Lex Kerssemakers, senior vice president of Volvo Americas and president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, said the automaker intends to quickly boost its U.S. annual sales from about 57,000 currently.
"Our dealers have been longing for cars and for sales for so many years," Kerssemakers told Reuters at an event formalizing the company's agreement to build the new factory in South Carolina.

“When Henrik Fisker showed me his ideas, I got chills – it’s literally the most beautiful Mustang I have ever seen,” says Beau Boeckmann. Both Henrik Fisker and Galpin have a long history with specialty coach-building cars, and draw their inspiration from pony cars of the 60s and 70s. Together the team created a sculpted, sleek design and loaded it with power and performance enhancements that rival supercars. The Rocket’s lines emanate from the front, through the long hood, over a set of sculptured flared fenders and converge on its integrated rear spoiler, belying the car’s extreme power and refined athleticism. When Volvo lifted the veil on the new XC90 a little over a month ago, it announced that all versions would be powered by one engine design: a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder to be offered in various states of tune. That would range, Volvo said, all the way up to a high-output version with "around 400 horsepower," but while it wouldn't specify exact output, now it has.
The new High Performance Drive-E Powertrain incorporates two parallel turbochargers fed by a third electric turbo-compressor. Instead of feeding the cylinders directly, that third unit spools up the twin turbochargers, working together with a dual fuel pump pressurized to 250 bar.
The result is an output of 450 horsepower – far more than the existing 320-hp version and … more
Volvo touts its all-new 2016 XC90 SUV as the first product of the “new Volvo” and the launch of a company-wide rebirth. While Volvo isn’t completely flipping the script—and, say, making six-wheeled military motorcycles—the XC90 does represent its first independently developed car since being financially sugar-daddied by Chinese automaker Geely.
The 2016 XC90, which we recently also in, is also the model’s first clean-sheet redesign in more than a decade. Furthermore, the XC90 debuts on the brand’s Scalable Product Architecture, a modular platform that will underpin a variety of vehicles. Underscoring the crossover’s importance was the flotilla of engineers, designers, and executives that … more
Volvo is revealing its new crossover flagship, the three-row XC90, that could set the styling direction of the brand for years to come.
The 2015 model, which first appeared in 2002, gets a longer hood, a new logo and sharpened lines. There is a new taillight design and wheel sizes up to 22 inches.
Volvo is treating the debut as a big deal, not only a new model but a new day for the Swedish luxury brand once owned by Ford and now controlled by Chinese automaker Geely.
"We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company," says Hakan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Car Group, in a statement. "XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years."
XC90 will be … more
The power you want. The fuel economy you dream of. It's the thrill of efficiency. It's performance with a conscience. That's Volvo innovating for you.
Consider Volvo’s 2015 V60 station wagon penance for all the boxy cars the company threw at us in the 1980s and '90s.
No longer refrigerator-shaped, the style of this all-new car leaves its forefathers in the dust. The sleek silhouette puts form ahead of function to create a wagon just as good for a play date as it is on a real date.
But pack light. The V60 can’t haul like old Volvo wagons used to.
Volvo -- a brand that’s Swedish by heritage but Chinese by ownership -- also fitted the car with a new, more efficient engine and transmission. The V60 manages to pack in the European panache of rival wagons like the BMW 328i or Audi Allroad, and for less money, starting at $36,225.
Though wagons get only a morsel of the U.S. … more
Associate Editor Michael Febo: I’ve always had trouble putting my finger on Volvo’s specific aesthetic. The designs are clean and simple, yet so functional. It finally materialized in front of me while driving the latest Swedish offering through the historic site where Captain James Tiberius Kirk will give his life defending the universe and time continuum as we know it from Soran 357 years from now. In between the cragged red clay spires of Veridian III I realized the new V60 Sports Wagon shares the same minimalist artistry as a galaxy class starship.
The 2014 S60 received a slight interior and exterior refresh, but for 2015 it’s joined by the V60 wagon. Both are available with Volvo’s new Drive-E engine line. The … more
Ergonomic seats in the front grip your body on tight turns. In the rear, seats come in 40/20/40 segments, offering plenty of room and flexibility for your lifestyle. Climb inside and you’re greeted by a sleek, luxurious interior that evokes design cues from contemporary Scandinavian furniture.
Bold new look
Stand out for all the right reasons. The V60 isn’t simply a repurposed sedan with a lifted trunk. Rather, it’s designed for purpose, the way a wagon should be. The wide grille and lights form a prominent face. Clean lines flow from the classic Volvo V-shaped sculpted hood, creating strong shoulders that frame the signature tail lights and integrated exhaust. Clearly, the V60 has a style of its own. … more
